Kauai With Kids: Spouting Horn, Glass Beach, and Hanapepe

Kauai with Kids

We recently had an amazing week in Kauai with our girls and Aaron’s parents! It’s such a beautiful island and I can see why plenty of movies have been filmed here.

We stayed the night at the Radisson and flew out of Portland airport (it’s seriously the best airport we’ve ever used) with Alaska Air.  The girls did great on the flight and watched Lilo & Stitch to get ready for our week ahead.

Once we arrived, we mostly stocked up on groceries from Costco (our in laws have a timeshare with Marriott) and then headed out to enjoy the beach for a bit.

On our first full day on the island, we were up bright and early (thanks to our youngest waking up at 4:30 am local time- ha ha! 😆) and decided to explore the region around us (we stayed on the southern part of the island).

Spouting Horn

First, we headed over to Spouting Horn. Legend has it that Spouting Horn is home to a large mo‘o (lizard) who got stuck in the tube while trying to catch a Hawaiian swimmer named Liko. To get away, Liko swam under the lava shelf to fool the lizard into chasing him and escaped through the hole at the top. The  lizards tried to follow him but couldn’t fit and remains permanently stuck. The hiss and roar of the water as it explodes through the top of the rocks is said to be the lizard’s breath.

It’s a beautiful spot to stop by that doesn’t take up too much time! We enjoyed looking at the blowhole for a bit (there’s a fence there to keep visitors safe- please don’t try to bypass it for any reason) and then wandered past the vendors as the girls looked for some cute souvenirs.

Glass Beach

Glass Beach

This is an interesting little beach located in the middle of an industrial area. I originally went over 10 years ago with some friends while at BYUH and thought it could be fun to go back with our girls. Unfortunately, they both fell asleep in the car so my in laws were kind enough to take turns hanging out with them while Aaron and I checked out the beach for a bit.

Look at all those tiny pieces of sea glass!

Did I mention how pregnant I was on this trip?! 32 weeks in this photo. 😉

The whole beach is covered in tiny sea glass. We had a nice time exploring the beach and looking at all the tiny bits of glass. This beach is great for beach combing, but is unsafe for swimming.

Hanapepe

We found Lilo and Stitch!

We headed over to Hanapepe for lunch. It’s a sleepy, little town that is actually the hometown of Lilo & Stitch. There’s a cute mural of the movie right next to the bookstore, Talk Story (which is worth a visit itself).  We wandered through the bookstore and then headed over to Bobbie’s for a fantastic plate lunch (with huge portions)! We recommend getting the Teriyaki Beef and the Kalua Pork.

Afterwards, we checked out the famous swinging bridge. It definitely swings a bit when you walk across, so make sure to hold on to your little ones!

On our way out of town, we stopped at Lappert’s Ice Cream (the best on the island! Make sure to get a punch card, because you will eat that much ice cream during your vacation  😉). Right next door is also a shave ice place if you’d rather have a dairy free treat.

Being turned into a sand mermaid 😉

The rest of the day, we spent at the beach in front of our hotel. We saw plenty of monk seals and enjoyed playing in the sand and waves. It was the perfect way to end our first full day on the island.

P.S Looking for a cute swimsuit for you and/or your daughter? Check out Janela Bay. They have the cutest suits! Our girls loved wearing theirs on our trip!
