The MET was hands down the best museum we visited in New York City. I felt like it had something for everyone in it. You like history? Check out the Egyptian Temple of Dendur or the room full of Ancient Greek vases. More into art? Check out the rooms and rooms of Van Gogh, Monet, Dagas and countless others beautiful art. They have an entire exhibit just on music and whole rooms setup to be the interiors of houses from various time periods. It’s pretty amazing. There’s definitely not enough time in a day to see everything, so definitely worth planning out a bit in advance. Have you been? Do you have a favorite at the MET?
The second stop on the ferry takes you from the Statue of Liberty to Ellis island. The museum was amazing. I loved the different exhibits and learning more about the history. It was definitely a challenge for those who came to the United States and I have a lot of respect for those who immigrated here (back then and today too 💛). I would definitely recommend visiting along with the Statue of Liberty. We spent about half a day exploring both stops and it was one of my favorite things we did in NYC. Have you been? Do you have any ancestors that came through Ellis island? Mine all came before Ellis island was the official spot for immigration (around 1890), but there’s a spot at the museum to look more into your family history if you’re interested.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me…”
It was amazing to see the Statue of Liberty in person! We took the official (and only) ferry to the island and enjoyed walking around the statue itself, climbing up to the pedestal, and then touring the museum afterwards.
One of my really good friends, @brookemorrill, used to live in Brooklyn and she mentioned that I should visit the New York Public Library and check out their exhibit. I spent one morning there and just loved it. Literary treasures like A. A Milne’s original Pooh Bear and friends stuffed animals, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a manuscript from one of the Brontë sisters, Charles dickens’ writing desk, a school primer from pioneer times, and so much more. Tickets are free, although they are timed. It wasn’t busy when I visited, so I was able to go right in, but reservations can also be made online. Also, they had some of the best souvenirs (I got my littlest an autographed copy of Library Lion 🥰).
The Museum of Natural History was a great museum to visit. We loved looking at all the dinosaur bones (and sent our kids tons of pictures) and we also enjoyed the exhibit on South America. My husband lived in Peru for two years while on a mission for our church, so it’s always fun to find things that remind him of his time out there. Do you enjoy visiting museums while on vacation?
